United Women in Faith has invited registrants to join in our longstanding commitment to voting rights for all people by donating to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. Contributions to this organization are not tax deductible. Below learn more about our commitment and the work of the FRRC:
https://www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/gc2020/umw-voting-rights-protections-in-the-us
About the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition
"The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC) is a statewide grassroots organization led by returning citizens. Our members are people who have been incarcerated or directly impacted and are now dedicated to ending discrimination, disenfranchisement and stigma against people with convictions in order to create a truly participatory democracy, a fairer criminal justice system and meaningful opportunities for formerly incarcerated people to thrive. For many years, FRRC has been building a statewide movement to transform the policy and narrative around criminal justice reform and the communities most impacted by it."
Fighting for Floridians Equitable Access to the Ballot
"Florida Rights Restoration Coalition’s goal is to eradicate Florida’s felon disenfranchisement policies by empowering returning citizens with education and training, creating a network of powerful advocates. Our vision is to grow a base of galvanized returning citizens and grassroots activists that would take ownership of community organizing by actively engaging in peer-to-peer and public education around the restoration of voting/civil rights, criminal justice reform and reentry issues, and thereby increase public safety."
More About Disenfranchisement Policies in Florida, Amendment 4 and Next Steps
"One of the many consequences Floridians faced was the loss of voting rights through felon disenfranchisement. This loss was pivotal because it diminished the capacity of returning citizens to impact criminal justice reform by stripping the returning citizen of their voice and the leverage needed to remove barriers to reentry as well as stem the flow of the school to prison pipeline.
The passage of Amendment 4, led by Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which ‘automatically’ restored voting rights to persons convicted of a felony offense once they have fully completed their sentence have now given returning citizens a historical opportunity to have a tremendous impact on criminal justice and reentry reform. However, the Governor and congress of Florida contested the passing of the Amendment 4 by passing SB 7066, requiring the supervisor of elections to make a final determination of whether a person who has been convicted of a felony offense is eligible to register to vote, including if he or she has completed all the terms of his or her sentence, etc. that it does not include fines and fees. In May 2020, a federal judge issued a favorable opinion for the Plaintiffs class action contesting the constitutionality of SB 7066 as it relates to Returning Citizens who owe legal financial obligations as a result of their felony convictions and are unable to pay. Hundreds of thousands of Returning Citizens were then eligible to register to vote. The state then filed a motion for stay pending the appeal which was denied by the trial court so they appealed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and on July 1st, the 11th Circuit granted the state’s motion for stay instantly invalidating the eligibility of the hundreds of thousands of Returning Citizens who just became eligible. On July 16th, 2020, the Supreme Court allowed the Stay Order to remain in effect. Later, the Florida Supreme Court issued an advisory opinion advising that “all terms of sentence” includes all legal financial obligations, including fines, restitution, costs, and fees ordered.
We work closely with several counties’ court system on the provisions of the law to address financial obligations for returning citizens who apply. In addition, FRRC has partnered with the League of Women Voters of Florida to develop an Attorney Assistance Program so that pro bono attorneys assist returning citizens through this process and advocate for relief as needed on a case-by-case basis. Returning citizens who do not qualify for either of these programs are eligible for direct financial assistance from our Fines and Fees Fund. This assistance is in the form of a scholarship-type awards payable directly to the clerk of court for the county in which the returning citizen was convicted. With 1.4 million returning citizens in Florida now eligible to vote, FRRC is presented with an unprecedented opportunity to create a constituency base of returning citizens that will not only impact policies in Florida, but on a national level as well."

United Women in Faith is so grateful to be partnering with Cornerstone Family Ministries, a national mission institution since 1892, for the Ubuntu Day of Service at Assembly 2022 in Orlando. Cornerstone’s mission is to nourish young bodies, develop young minds and foster hope through Christ … one child at a time. Cornerstone sponsors over 150 child-care centers under their Child Care Food Program sponsorship, serving over 16,800 children each year.
Cornerstone is passionate about:
One way our partner centers teach children about nutrition is through gardening, using our dietitian-curated USDA curriculum and garden boxes.
This is where you come in! We are asking all Assembly attendees to bring seed packets that will be sorted and packaged with educational information for each seed during the Ubuntu Day of Service. (Please note that seeds cannot be shipped to the convention center.)
From there, we will mail them out to our child-care centers as part of our Garden Movement Program. With your help, thousands of children will have new nutrition education opportunities through these seed packets. Here are the seeds we are requesting:Yes! There is an app for Assembly.
